Ends Meet

The cheerful young woman
With a few groceries
Chatted at the checkout

With the cheerful cashier,
While a man with his own
Items waited behind

And was startled to hear
The cheerful young woman
Pray for a miracle,

Laughing while anxiously
Swiping her debit card,
Adding that tomorrow

At least, would be payday,
Then sighing with relief
When the small amount cleared.
