The Science of Crying

We don’t know why we do it.
It comes with our signs and faiths,
Our storytelling beliefs.

Other mammals use their glands
To track and signal presence,
But we’re possessed by meanings
That make their own announcements.

Meanings don’t need glands or scent
To get their messages sent.
Meanings make the world

Meaningful, make metaphors
For meanings from gasps and sighs
That weren’t meant to mean a thing.
Meanings make us cry.
