People in Books

Everybody knows
That almost nobody looks
Like people look in movies,

But not enough people now
Read regularly
To know nearly no one looks
The way they're described in books.

We're mostly battered tubers,
Lumpen potatoes.
We're mostly sallow, spotty.

It's not that there's no beauty.
It's the ratio writers
Keep twisting, wanting
Like the rest of us less us.
