It may be worth recalling
Most life on Earth is just that—
Life, and one big vat of it.
The old primordial soup
Still serves the mess hall of cells,
Singular, prokaryotic,
Maxing out as mats and slime,
And the lion’s share belongs,
Really, to bacteria
And bacteriophages,
Not to blue whales and sea lice.
Before you say what life’s like,
Consider what most life’s like.
Fierce minutiae in the waves.
