Years Are Rare

When you learn to count the days,
Count all the days, count each day
As soon as it’s passed under

The boat. It takes attention.
It takes a sustained focus.
It’s a complete waste of time

Except that it creates time.
Time spent attending to time
Places wedges in the stone

That will begin to split lines
Open, expose time to air,
Find any fossils in there.

The stone is made of the waves.
Attention opens the waves.
