Of course I’m still middle-aged,
She snorted. I used to be
Middle-aged for life, and now
I’m middle-aged for death. Half
Of all the great and simple
People whose names I recall
Died younger than I am now,
Half older. So, I’m mid-way
Among the ages of death.
She looked slightly triumphant
But rather more defiant,
Grinning and jutting her chin.
I’ll consider myself old,
She added, when I’ve outlived
All those who would do me in.
