They’re meant to identify,
To signal, but there’s the rub.
What you signal is never
What you get. Your signs are read
All kinds of of unintended
And often unkind ways.
You’ll never mean what you meant,
The meaning you brought to it,
Putting the cap on your head.
You’ll mean what they bring to it.
