Hard to know where this ancient
Population first emerged.
We have no fossils
Past a few millennia.
Coalescent approaches
Vanish in the sands
Of signature devouring
Change much beyond that.
They did not invent themselves
But they may have invented
Invention itself.
They are startlingly aware
Of themselves as a story,
A story they invented.
