The charioteer behind the shield
Of wisdom, lame, whips his horses forward.
X is always followed by Y, but Y
Is never followed by X. This is known
As free will or self-determination.
The snake is his symbol, the miseries
He suffers with the rest of us, grounded
Or arboreal but never in flight,
Belong only to the dragon Yx
Who beats free wings beyond this gravity.
