Glad Before Dawn

To whom should we be grateful
Who is not a human ghost,
Human phantom, one of ours?
Gratitude itself is ours,
As are forgiveness, mercy,

Retaliation, justice,
And hate—all the ghosts are ours,
Good and bad. In beasts, trees, seas,
And stars those ghosts seem absent.
Don’t be grateful; just be glad.
