The Impossible Year 2017

Has not finished without me.

Papa, Grandpa, and Daughter

Sat at the kitchen table

Cleaning avocado pits,

Poking each with four toothpicks 

And suspending them

In water glasses.

Grandpa read the instructions

For growing avocados,

And Daughter read the cautions

That the trees might not bear fruit.

Papa scrutinized the roots

Of plants already started.

Roots come after origins.
