God was an endling, the last
Of His kind, and even He
Wandered the wide world Gods made,
Looking for food, a haven,
A cleft in the rock that would
Open into that other
World that had been torn from Him.
I must pay for everything,
He said--many, many times.
But what does it mean to pay?
In an empty world, He saw
He must have been human once,
Like the rest of His people,
Still in debt to human death.
